Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, whose name has come to light post the Kolkata scandal, has been embroiled in countless controversies and legal scrutiny. Formerly the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Ghosh led a career marred by corruption, illegal activities, and misuse of power. His tenure has now become subject to public and legal investigation.

Dr. Sandeep Ghosh's Entire Profile

Born and raised in Bangaon, about 80 km from Kolkata, Dr. Ghosh completed his studies in 1989 at Bangaon High School. He then pursued medical education from RG Kar Medical College, graduating in 1994. While his early education and professional journey were commendable, his later career was fraught with controversies.

Another professor associated with a different hospital in Bengal, speaking off the record, mentioned, 'Ghosh was initially 16th on the list of principals for the interview. Overnight, he climbed to the top of the list and became the principal in 2021.'

'Power Changes People'

Dr. Bidisha Dutta, a batchmate of Sandeep Ghosh, said, 'He's an alumnus of RG Kar Medical College, graduating in 1994. During our college days, he wasn't our friend nor considered a mischievous student. But power can change people. Once he gained power, many things changed for him.' Dr. Dutta added that Sandeep Ghosh was first appointed as MSVP of the National Medical College.

Transfer Orders Reversed Twice

Several complaints have been lodged against Ghosh with the state health department, leading to multiple investigations. This resulted in two transfer orders, both of which Ghosh managed to overturn. Allegedly, a group of students and interns protested in his favor.

Serious Allegations

During his tenure as principal of RG Kar Medical College, Ghosh frequently faced severe allegations of misconduct. These ranged from financial corruption, illegal commissions, tender manipulation, to the unlawful use of bodies kept for post-mortem examinations.

Sources indicate that Ghosh faced numerous accusations of corruption, from money extortion to illegal drug sales and human rights violations. Despite repeated letters from the college staff to the health department, no action was taken.

Dr. Akhtar Ali, RG Kar Hospital's professor and former Deputy Superintendent, remarked, 'He is a very corrupt man. He used to fail students, take 20% commission, and earn money from every hospital work. He even supplied alcohol to students in the guest house. He's very powerful, like a mafia. I complained against him in 2023, but shortly after, I was transferred.'

Dr. Akhtar Ali added, 'I filed a complaint in 2023... His resignation [post the rape and murder] was merely a show. Within 8 hours, he was appointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College.'

Corruption Pattern Unveiled

The rape and murder incident involving a trainee doctor ignited widespread outrage among medical students and staff, leading to demands for Ghosh's resignation. This incident uncovered a pattern of alleged corruption and irregularities, with former colleagues and staff accusing Ghosh of running a 'mafia-like' operation within the institution.

CBI Questioning for 13 Hours

Claims of intentionally failing students and misusing institutional resources have tarnished Ghosh's reputation. The CBI is investigating the RG Kar case. On Saturday, they questioned Dr. Ghosh for about 13 hours.

The depth of Ghosh's alleged corruption and the recurring avoidance of action have cast a shadow over the institution's reputation. Legal probes and public anger underscore the seriousness of these allegations and the demand for transparency and justice.
