BJP MP from Bhopal, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, stirred controversy during the Lok Sabha elections with her remarks on the martyr Hemant Karkare who perished in the Mumbai attacks. NCP MLC Prakash Gajbhiye showcased a unique protest against these statements on Wednesday.

Dressed in police uniform, the NCP MLC Prakash Gajbhiye arrived at the Legislative Council holding a placard that read, 'It’s a superstition that I died because of Sadhvi Pragya’s curse; I sacrificed my life for the country.'

What Did Sadhvi Pragya Say?

Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, while commenting on the martyrdom of Hemant Karkare, had said, 'He wrongfully implicated me; I warned him that his entire lineage would be wiped out. He died due to his own karma.' Pragya accused Karkare of treating her very poorly and framing her wrongly.

Who Was Hemant Karkare?

Hemant Karkare was a victim of the terrorist bullets in the Mumbai attacks. He was also investigating the Malegaon serial blast case, in which Sadhvi Pragya was an accused. Nonetheless, there had been many questions raised about his charge sheet.

The then ATS chief Hemant Karkare, martyred in the 26/11 terrorist attacks, was born on 12 December 1954 into a Karhade Brahmin family. He became an IPS officer in 1982 and later served as the Joint Police Commissioner in Maharashtra before being appointed as the ATS chief. During his tenure, he performed several noteworthy operations. The Indian government posthumously honored him with the Ashoka Chakra on 26th November 2009, saluting his martyrdom.
