The tension between Elon Musk and Donald Trump is escalating into a political confrontation. Meanwhile, a senior Russian parliamentarian has extended an offer of 'political asylum' to Musk within Russia. This move echoes the high-profile security assurances previously provided by the Kremlin.
Russia Offers Political Asylum
Dmitry Novikov, the First Deputy Head of the International Affairs Committee in the Russian Duma, shared with Russia's state news agency TASS that Russia could consider offering Musk sanctuary should he request it.
Novikov noted, 'Musk's circumstances are entirely different; he may not need political asylum, yet if required, Russia is certainly capable of providing it.' He also referenced the asylum granted to Edward Snowden in his statement.
Elon Musk in Controversy
This remark comes at a time when turmoil grips American politics. Former Trump advisor Steve Bannon labeled Musk an 'illegal immigrant,' demanding his deportation and the seizure of SpaceX. Musk's recent threat to shut down his Dragon spacecraft, which serves as a bridge between NASA and the International Space Station, has heightened concerns regarding national security, prompting calls for governmental intervention.
Russia Declares It an Internal U.S. Matter
Despite this, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has distanced Russia from the controversy, stating, 'This is an internal U.S. matter, and we will not intervene.' However, Russia's historical actions tell a different story. Beyond Edward Snowden, Russia has sheltered various Western critics, including British blogger Graham Phillips.
Once Close Allies, Now Fractured Relations
The rift between Trump and Musk has stirred up Washington. Once perceived as close associates, their relationship soured when Musk opposed Trump's spending bill. In retaliation, Trump accused Musk of 'being out of his mind' and hinted at reviewing SpaceX's governmental contracts.
Subsequently, Trump has softened his tone, saying, 'I just wish him well,' though tensions have not fully dissipated. Musk, on his part, has also moderated his stance and retracted the threat to shut down NASA missions.
