Under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, the Indian team clinched the T20 World Cup title in 2024 last month. In the thrilling final at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown on June 29, India secured a narrow 7-run victory over South Africa, marking their second T20 World Cup title; their first was back in 2007.

Following India's championship win, captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20 internationals. There's growing speculation about the future of Rohit's ODI and Test career, especially since he's now over 37 years old. The big question remains: how much longer can he play international cricket? Rohit's been on a break since the West Indies World Cup victory and is set to miss the upcoming three ODI matches against Sri Lanka.

'I don’t think that far ahead...'

Rohit has made it clear that his retirement isn't imminent and fans can expect to see him in action for a while longer. During an event in Dallas on Sunday, when asked about retirement, the Indian captain expressed that he isn't someone who thinks too far ahead but assured that there's still a lot left in him. 'As I said, I don’t think that far ahead...', Rohit stated, 'So definitely, you will see me playing for some time to come.'

Before his declaration of retirement from T20 cricket, legends like Virat Kohli had already retired from T20 internationals, with Ravindra Jadeja joining them shortly after. Prior to this, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit would captain India in the current World Test Championship cycle as well as the Champions Trophy scheduled for February-March next year. Rohit led India in the T20 World Cup 2022 where they fell to England in the semifinal, and a year later, the team lost to Australia in the 50-over World Cup final held in India. Under Rohit's leadership, India triumphed in the T20 World Cup 2024 held in West Indies and the United States.

Making his T20 international debut in 2007, Rohit holds the unique distinction of being the only Indian cricketer to have played in every T20 World Cup to date. He scored a formidable 257 runs across 8 matches in the 2020 T20 World Cup, which was the highest number for an Indian player.

Rohit Sharma's illustrious career includes scoring 4,137 runs in 59 Test matches with an average of 45.46. In ODIs, he's notched up 10,709 runs in 262 matches at an impressive average of 49.12. Rohit has scored 4,231 runs in his 159-match T20 international career. Beyond the international stage, Rohit has also excelled in the IPL 2024, where he made 417 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 150 and an average of 32.08. Overall, in 257 IPL matches, he has 6,628 runs with an average of 29.72 and a strike rate of 131.14.
