Indian wrestler Reetika Hooda faced a tough loss in the women's 76 kg freestyle wrestling quarter-final. Played on July 10, Reetika was defeated by top-seeded and two-time World Championship medalist Apury Kaizi from Kyrgyzstan. The match concluded with a 1-1 draw, but since the last point was scored by Apury Kaizi, she emerged victorious. Reetika now has a chance to win a bronze medal through the repechage round; however, she needs Apury Kaizi to reach the event's final.
What is the Rule of Passivity in Wrestling?
Reetika's quarter-final match was intensely fought, with both wrestlers scoring 1-1 points through passivity. In freestyle wrestling, passivity is used to make the match more aggressive. This happens when neither wrestler scores a point within the first two minutes. In such cases, the less aggressive wrestler is given 30 seconds to score a point. If they fail to do so, the opposing team receives a point.
In the first half, Reetika Hooda scored 1 point through passivity. In the second half, Apury Kaizi from Kyrgyzstan scored 1 point through passivity. According to wrestling rules, the wrestler who scores the last technical point wins. Since Apury Kaizi scored the last point, she was declared the winner.
