The Aam Aadmi Party's Political Affairs Committee meeting was held at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence on Thursday. The agenda was finding candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. While the nation focuses on counting in Jharkhand and Maharashtra, Arvind Kejriwal has taken the lead by selecting candidates ahead of rivals for the Delhi elections. The move appears strategic, but it raises the question: Is the election date announcement imminent? Has Kejriwal sensed that the election date might be announced soon?

Could Delhi Elections Be Held Ahead of Schedule?

The Election Commission has begun preparation for the Delhi Assembly elections. They have provided a week, until November 28, to add, delete, or modify names in the electoral roll. The voter list, complete with all amendments, is expected to be published by January 6, 2025. Typically, elections are scheduled only after the final voter list is released, suggesting that an official announcement before January 6, 2025, is unlikely. Therefore, elections before February seem improbable.

When Will Elections Be Held? Insights From Past Experiences

In fact, the announcement for the last election in 2020 was made on January 6. The final voter list was published in the morning, followed by an Election Commission press conference in the evening. Voting took place on February 8, and counting on February 11. Going back five years to 2015, the elections were also held in February. In both 2015 and 2020, the election notifications were issued on January 14. This time, Arvind Kejriwal has started announcing his candidates, but the elections are still about two and a half months away.
