The BJP has put forward a claim to form the government in Manipur. BJP leader Thokchom Radheshyam Singh, after meeting with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Wednesday, claimed that 44 legislators are ready to form a new government in the state. Along with nine other legislators, he met the Governor at Raj Bhavan. Singh remarked, "Respecting the people's desire, 44 legislators are prepared to form the government. We have communicated this to the Governor and explored potential solutions for this issue."

He further stated that the Governor paid attention to their message and would begin actions in the best interest of the people. When questioned about making a formal claim to form the government, he mentioned that the central BJP leadership would make that decision.

'No Opposition...'

BJP leader commented, "Speaker Satyabrata has met with the 44 legislators both individually and collectively. There is no one opposing the formation of a new government. The people are enduring immense difficulties. During the last tenure, two years were lost to the COVID crisis, and in this term, two more years have been squandered due to conflicts."

In May 2023, amidst criticisms regarding handling ethnic clashes between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, BJP leader N Biren Singh resigned from the chief ministerial post. Subsequently, President's Rule has been in effect in Manipur since February.

Currently, within the 60-member assembly, there are 59 legislators, as one seat is vacant due to a legislator's death. The BJP-led coalition includes 32 Meitei legislators, three Manipuri Muslim legislators, and nine Naga legislators, totaling 44. The Congress holds five legislators, all belonging to the Meitei community. The remaining 10 legislators are Kuki, with seven having won the previous election on a BJP ticket, two from the Kuki People's Alliance, and one independent.
