Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a bilateral meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, on Tuesday at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. This marked PM Modi's first visit to Canada in over a decade and his first meeting with Carney since returning to power for the third time. During their discussions, both leaders expressed a strong intention to strengthen and deepen bilateral ties.

PM Modi stated, “This is my first opportunity to meet him after his election, and I congratulate him on his remarkable victory. India and Canada, with his leadership, will collaborate across various sectors in the future.”

Describing the meeting as excellent, Prime Minister Modi emphasized, “India and Canada are bound by shared beliefs in democracy, freedom, and the rule of law. Prime Minister Carney and I are always ready to work together to strengthen the India-Canada friendship. There are immense possibilities in trade, energy, space, clean energy, critical minerals, fertilizers, and beyond.”

Following the bilateral meeting, Narendra Modi posted on social media, “Had an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. I congratulated him and the Government of Canada for successfully hosting the G7 Summit. India and Canada share strong commitments to democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney extended a warm welcome to Prime Minister Modi at the G7, expressing, “Hosting you at the G7 is a great honor. It reflects your country’s significance, your leadership, and the importance of the issues we aim to unite in addressing.”

Carney added, “From energy security to the energy transition you are helping lead, to the future of artificial intelligence, to our battle against international oppression and terrorism, your presence here is greatly honored.”
