The stellar performance of Indian athletes continues at the Paris Paralympics 2024. On September 7 (Saturday), Navdeep Singh clinched the gold medal in the Men's Javelin Throw (F41) event. Meanwhile, Simran Sharma brought home the bronze medal in the Women's 200m (T12) event. With these two achievements, India's tally at the Paris Paralympics 2024 has reached 29 medals, including 7 golds, 9 silvers, and 14 bronzes. India currently stands at 15th place in the medal tally.

Iranian Athlete Disqualified

In the final, Navdeep Singh's best throw was 47.32 meters, achieved on his second attempt. Although Iran's Sadegh Siah Beyt had initially taken the lead with 47.64 meters, he was disqualified after the event, giving Navdeep the gold. China's Pengjiang Sun took silver with a throw of 44.72 meters, while Iraq's Wildan Nukhailawi won bronze with 40.46 meters.

Meanwhile, in the Women's 200m (T12) final, Simran Sharma completed the race in 24.75 seconds. The gold in this event went to Cuba's Omara Elias Durand, who finished in 23.62 seconds. Venezuela's Paola Alejandra Lopez Perez secured the silver with a time of 24.19 seconds.

India has demonstrated its best performance yet at the Paralympic Games. In the Tokyo Paralympics 2020, India won 5 golds, 8 silvers, and 6 bronzes, making it the best performance to date with a total of 19 medals. The T12 category in Paralympic Games is for visually impaired athletes. Born prematurely, Simran Sharma spent the first 10 weeks of her life in an incubator, where it was discovered that she was visually impaired. Her coach and husband, Gajendra Singh, serves in the Army Service Corps. Simran trains at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. On Thursday, she missed a medal in the Women's 100m T12 final, finishing fourth with a time of 12.31 seconds due to a slow start.
