Why is this election important?

The MCD ward and Standing Committee elections in Delhi were delayed by 19 months. This election will decide which party will control the most powerful body in the MCD, the Standing Committee. There are 18 members in the Standing Committee: 1 member from each of the 12 zones and 6 members elected from the House. The Standing Committee is considered more powerful than the Mayor because all key decisions related to MCD are made here. Therefore, every party wants to seize control of the Standing Committee. The party holding the Chairman post of the Standing Committee will have increased control over the MCD.

Sixty councilors from three parties in the race

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress each have 60 councilors vying for the positions of Chairman, Deputy Chairman, and Standing Committee member in the 12 MCD zones.
