In anticipation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Manipur on September 13—seven months since the imposition of President's Rule—the state is witnessing a surge in political and security activities. On Tuesday morning, Governor A.K. Bhalla met with BJP legislators from Churachandpur district at the Deputy Commissioner's office to discuss preparations for the visit.
Kuki-Zo Legislators to Present Memorandum to the Prime Minister
The meeting commenced at 10:30 AM, including Tapaimukh MLA Ngursanglur Sanate, Thanlon MLA Vungzagin Valte, Henglep MLA Letzamang Haokip, Churachandpur MLA L.M. Khaute, and Saikot MLA Paolienlal Haokip. BJP district president Thanglam Haokip was also present, although Singhat MLA Chinlunthang was absent.
The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, DGP Rajeev Singh, and Security Advisor Kuldeep Singh. According to sources, the Kuki-Zo legislators informed the Governor of their intent to present a memorandum to the Prime Minister, reiterating the demand for a 'political solution', which broadly seeks union territory status for the Kuki-Zo-majority hill districts.
High-Level Discussions at Raj Bhavan
This meeting followed a high-level discussion on September 7 at Raj Bhavan, Imphal, chaired by Governor Bhalla. Attendees included 23 of the 32 BJP legislators, former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyavrat Singh, and State BJP President A. Sharda Devi. The primary focus was on program management, security measures, and ensuring peace during the Prime Minister's visit.
Heightened Security Preparations in Manipur
Across Manipur, security preparations have been expedited. On Monday, senior army and police officials—Lieutenant General Abhijit Pendharkar (Commander, 3 Corps) and Major General Ravroop Singh (IG Assam Rifles)—inspected Kangla Fort in Imphal, where the Prime Minister will hold a public event. The officials reviewed construction work, security deployment, and crowd management strategies.
As per the program, Prime Minister Modi will address people at the Peace Ground in Churachandpur and will later attend events at Kangla Fort in Imphal. This visit marks his first trip to Manipur following the ethnic conflict that began on May 3, 2023.
