The Women's Wing of the Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee on Thursday urged for the safe and rapid release of six people abducted from Jiribam, Manipur. Among them are women and children. The Meitei women leaders stressed in a statement the need for immediate and serious intervention from the highest levels of government to secure the release of the abducted individuals. They warned that any harm to the kidnapped persons might be seen as tacit approval by the responsible authorities.
They highlighted that such a situation could deepen public mistrust and foster a belief that the government is 'fostering violence for political gains and dividing Manipur along ethnic lines.' The women leaders cautioned that failing to secure the release would not only weaken the moral and security responsibilities of the Indian state but also raise grave questions about the intent and impacts of support under the suspension of operations framework.
The leaders emphasized, "The government needs to understand that protecting these women and children is not just a humanitarian matter, but a test of its commitment to peace and unity in Manipur." Hence, they called for the immediate and unequivocal involvement of the Home Minister and the Prime Minister to clearly demonstrate the government's stance on safeguarding the vulnerable, maintaining public trust, and preventing escalation of conflicts.
