Coldrif Cough Syrup Company Owner Missing, MP Police Probes Factory

The investigation into the deaths of 20 children in Chhindwara from the toxic Coldrif cough syrup has now extended to Tamil Nadu. A seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) from Madhya Pradesh, conducted a probe at the factory and office of the pharmaceutical company located near Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

The investigation officer informed the news agency Bhasha that the drug company's owner had vacated the premises three days before the probe began. The team is gathering crucial information based on the available CCTV footage at the registered office.

The manufacturing plant located at Sunguvarchatram in Kanchipuram has already been sealed. Tamil Nadu police are providing local assistance to the SIT.

20 Children Dead, Drug Production Halted

A>The Deputy CM of Madhya Pradesh, Rajendra Shukla, confirmed on October 7 that 20 children have died in the state due to kidney failure, attributed to toxic cough syrup consumption.

On October 4, the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department announced that samples of cough syrup taken from the factory were found to be 'adulterated', leading to an immediate directive to 'halt production'.

Notably, this Chennai-based drug company has been supplying the cough syrup 'Coldrif' to states including Puducherry, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The Tamil Nadu government banned this drug from October 1 onwards.
