During the chaos surrounding Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi's Kolkata visit, political accusations have erupted in West Bengal. Following disruptions and vandalism at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Stadium in Salt Lake, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed apology, saying she was deeply hurt and stunned by the events. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) described the incident as an insult to both Bengal and football, launching a direct attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.

Messi’s arrival at the stadium for his acclaimed G.O.A.T tour on Saturday was marred by alleged mismanagement, forcing him to leave the grounds after just 10 minutes. Thousands who had purchased expensive tickets were left dismayed. A disappointed group of spectators protested within the stadium, leading to reported instances of bottle throwing, vandalism to hoardings, and law enforcement intervention. As conditions deteriorated, Messi and other VIPs were evacuated under tight security.

In response to the situation, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of shedding crocodile tears. He alleged that the disarray and corruption have become ingrained in the working style of the AITC government. Malviya stated the incident offended the sentiments of Bengalis and football fans. He demanded the filing of an FIR against State Sports Minister Aroop Biswas and Minister Sujit Bose, seeking their resignation and a full ticket refund for spectators.

BJP Demands Sports Minister’s Resignation

The Bengal unit of BJP also declared the event damaging to the state’s cultural image, calling for the resignation of the Chief Minister and Sports Minister. The party accused a ticket scandal, alleging charges of 8,000 to 10,000 rupees from the public and claimed Messi's tour was leveraged for political gains.

State Congress President Subhankar Sarkar also condemned the government, indicating the administration's complete failure. He asserted that the disarray tarnished Bengal’s international image.

Messi's short visit sparked outrage among fans with protests erupting.

TMC Disassociates from Event

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress distanced itself from the event, stating it was organized by a private agency. TMC spokesperson Tousif Rehman claimed the party held no involvement. Party leader Kunal Ghosh called the incident unfortunate and mentioned that the state government apologized to Messi, forming a probe committee. Additionally, he raised concerns over chants, damage, and flags, hinting at a conspiracy.

On the other side, BJP state president Shamik Bhattacharya dismissed the controversy over saffron flags within the stadium, deeming it normal. Overall, the disorder from Messi’s visit has escalated beyond sport to a significant political matter in Bengal.

Main Organizer Detained for Investigation

West Bengal's Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar addressed the media, stating that conditions were stabilized and law and order were restored. Kumar acknowledged dissatisfaction among fans who had hoped to see Messi play or remain longer on-field, adding that organizers provided written assurances of refunds for disappointed ticket holders.

Later, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim confirmed that a formal investigation had commenced. Shamim asserted, “At this stage, we cannot pinpoint anyone responsible. The inquiry is ongoing, and any found guilty will face consequences.” He further reported the situation around the stadium is now stable, with the main organizer detained under the investigation.

Messi Heads to Hyderabad After Kolkata

Kolkata marked the first city of Messi's three-day India tour, followed by scheduled stops in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. While the administration notes that the situation is now peaceful, the chaotic start has shifted focus from celebration to accountability. Organizers are under scrutiny, and fans await the promised refunds.
