Former Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, reflected on the 2012 Nirbhaya case while responding to the Pune bus rape incident. He asserted that crimes against women cannot be halted solely by legislation; strict enforcement is equally vital.

D.Y. Chandrachud, addressing the media during an event in Pune, was queried about the rape case in an MSRTC bus at Swargate, Pune.

Reportedly, a 26-year-old woman was raped in a bus on Tuesday morning. The accused, a repeat offender named Dattatreya Ramdas (37), executed the crime. To apprehend him, the police have formed 13 teams actively pursuing him.

Chandrachud highlighted that enacting laws for women's safety necessitates firm application to curb such crimes. In reference to the Nirbhaya incident, he mentioned the heinous gang rape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a moving bus in Delhi, which led to her subsequent death during treatment. This event sparked widespread international attention and a significant debate on women's safety.

Chandrachud remarked that societal responsibility transcends merely having laws. Ensuring proper and strict enforcement of laws is necessary for women to feel secure. Today, numerous women step out of their homes for work, education, and other pursuits. Creating a safe environment for them is our duty.

He further emphasized the need for thorough investigations, strict actions, expedient trials, and severe penalties. The law enforcement and police play a crucial role in this. Chandrachud urged for serious contemplation at every level to foster a safe working environment for women, which is the cornerstone of an equal society.
