In the midst of the ongoing uproar over a remark about Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, comedian Kunal Kamra has issued a statement condemning the vandalism by Shiv Sena supporters at Habitat Club.
In his Instagram statement, Kamra said, 'Entertainment venues are merely platforms—spaces for all kinds of shows. Habitat (or any other venue) is not responsible for my comedy, nor does it have the power or control over what I say or do. No political party does so either.'
Kamra further remarked, 'Attacking a venue over a comedian's words is as senseless as overturning a truck carrying tomatoes simply because you didn't like the butter chicken served.'
Will Action Be Taken Against Those Who Vandalized Habitat Center: Kamra
The right to free speech and expression should not be used solely to flatter the powerful and the wealthy, even if today's media suggests otherwise. Your inability to tolerate a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not alter the nature of my right. To my knowledge, mocking the circus of our leaders and political system is not against the law.
