- A trainee doctor said, 'We were scheduled to leave the protest site at 11 AM, but a significant group of people outside continued to chant 'We want Justice.' Despite repeated requests, they refused to leave.' The doctor reported that the crowd turned violent and began trying to break into the campus, ultimately causing destruction.

- TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee commented on the incident, 'Tonight, the hooliganism and barbarity at RG Kar have surpassed all bounds. - Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal expressed his anger, 'I'm very upset. What happened shouldn't have taken place. We did what was right. Now, the case has been handed over to the CBI.' What happened?

The incident occurred on the night of August 8-9 when the body of a trainee doctor was found at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The 31-year-old doctor was on night duty with three other doctors that night. Two were from the Chest Medicine Department, one was a trainee, and one was hospital staff. That night, all the doctors and staff had dinner together.

Accused is a police civilian volunteer

Afterward, the female doctor went to sleep in the hospital's seminar hall at around 2 AM. Sanjay Roy entered the hall from a back entrance and first brutally murdered and then raped her. Notably, the accused was neither hospital staff nor a patient's relative. He was serving as a civilian volunteer for Kolkata Police.

Sanjay Roy came to drink alcohol behind the hospital

Whenever a police officer was admitted to this medical college, he would remain present as an assistant to bring medications and provide other assistance. However, on the day of the incident, the accused came not for any duty but to drink alcohol behind the hospital premises. After consuming alcohol, he watched obscene videos on his mobile phone and then committed the atrocity.

The accused washed clothes at home

He was seen exiting the seminar hall at around 4:45 AM. After committing the crime, the accused attempted to tamper with evidence. The police found evidence showing the accused tried to wash off bloodstains at the crime scene. After returning home, he also washed his clothes. A case against the accused has been registered under Sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS. The investigation is now in the hands of the CBI.
