In a pioneering collaboration, ISRO and the Indian Navy successfully completed the well deck recovery operation for the Gaganyaan crew module on December 6, 2024. This trial, conducted off the coast of Visakhapatnam, was crucial for India’s forthcoming manned space missions. A well deck ship is specially designed to allow water entry, accommodating vessels like landing crafts inside.

This intricate method saw the Gaganyaan spacecraft first dropped into the ocean by another vessel. It was fetched and towed using ropes before being transferred to a well deck ship. Following this, it was securely docked, ready for crew members to disembark once docking is finalized.

These intense trials are part of a joint effort by ISRO and the Navy, focusing on diverse weight and shape simulations. The ultimate aim is to ensure swift and safe recovery for Indian astronauts returning from space. The exercises involve multiple stages including buoy placement, towing, well deck accommodations, and secure docking of the crew module.

The trials near Visakhapatnam adhered to all essential standard operating procedures. This joint drill is a significant step for the Gaganyaan mission, strengthening India's capabilities in handling adverse situations and ensuring crew safety.
