The recent parliamentary elections were a rollercoaster of emotions and outcomes. In a remarkable twist of events, six candidates won by margins that not only broke previous records but set new benchmarks, highlighting the unpredictable nature of elections. However, amidst these landslide victories, 21 constituencies witnessed the nail-biting finales where victory margins were less than 10,000 votes, making each count as crucial as ever. Among these, nine were won by candidates from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 11 fell into the lap of the opposition India block, and one was claimed by an independent candidate.
Breaking it down by party performance, BJP clinched eight seats and its ally Shiv Sena one, by margins less than ten thousand. Congress emerged victorious in six constituencies, while the Samajwadi Party took three. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) each had a close call with one seat apiece.
In Mumbai's Northwest, Shiv Sena triumphs by just 48 votes
In a tight race for Maharashtra's Northwest Mumbai parliamentary seat, fierce contenders included the Shiv Sena from the NDA camp and Shiv Sena (UBT) representing the India block. The close contest concluded with Ravindra Dattaram Waikar of Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena defeating Amol Gajanan Kirtikar of Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) by a mere 48 votes - the smallest margin in this election. Seats that were decided by a margin of under 10,000 votes included seven that were reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
