The U.S. State Department has agreed to supply India with 53 MK 54 torpedoes, and Congress has been notified. Once finalized, this deal will significantly boost the Indian Navy's capabilities, allowing these torpedoes to sink enemy submarines deep into the sea, creating their permanent resting place.

India requested these torpedoes from the U.S., culminating in this strategic move. The approximately ₹1470 crore deal also includes recoverable exercise torpedoes (REXTORP), air launch accessories, spare parts, torpedo containers, support tools, and training.

A few months back, India also received MH-60R Romeo Seahawk helicopters for its navy. These helicopters are known for their anti-submarine warfare proficiency. The addition of these torpedoes will further enhance their strength, safeguarding India from any Pakistani or Chinese submarine threats.

This torpedo weighs 276 kilograms and is 8.90 feet long, with a diameter of approximately one foot. It is equipped with 44 kilograms of plastic-bonded explosive PBXN-103, producing an impact equivalent to 108 kilograms of TNT on collision.

Powered by a liquid fuel engine, the torpedo can travel up to 9 kilometers underwater at a speed of 74.1 kilometers per hour. Its guidance system utilizes both active and passive acoustic systems, ensuring enemy submarines have no escape.
