‘Don’t Blame the Coach Alone, Players Are Also Responsible’: Ravi Shastri Supports Gautam Gambhir

Under Gautam Gambhir's coaching, the Indian team triumphed 2-1 in the three-match ODI series against South Africa. This win somewhat soothed the sting of the 0-2 loss in the Test series against the South Africans, but questions about Gambhir's coaching style persist.

Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri has spoken out about the loss in the Test series, making a strong statement about Gautam Gambhir. Shastri clearly stated that blaming a single individual for the team's defeat is unfair. The Indian team has lost Test series on home soil twice in nearly a year. Last year, New Zealand blanked the Indian team 3-0 in a Test series.

In a podcast discussion, Shastri noted that coaches are often the ones targeted after a team's loss. He mentioned that if he were the coach, he would take responsibility for the defeat. The Indian team's performance in white-ball formats under Gautam Gambhir has been excellent, yet he has not managed to bring stability to the Test team so far. During his coaching tenure, India's Test team has won 2 series, lost 3, and drawn 1.

Don't Target One: Shastri

Ravi Shastri said, ‘People should remember that players also need to shoulder responsibility. You can't target a single individual. This has happened to me, so I am sharing from experience. When such things occur, players need to acknowledge their mistakes. It's crucial for players to embrace the belief that from defeat, they will improve. Without this mindset, progress isn’t possible.’

While backing Gautam Gambhir, Ravi Shastri also issued a caution. Shastri believes that if results don't favor the team, the coach might be replaced. He stated, ‘If the performance is poor, you can also be removed. That's why patience is essential. Communication and management skills are vital to motivate the players.

Upon the conclusion of the ODI series, the Indian team will embark on a five-match T20 series against South Africa. The opening T20 match is scheduled for December 9 at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. The Indian players have already arrived in Cuttack for the encounter.
