The Indian Army plans to strengthen border surveillance by purchasing 20 tactical Remotely Piloted Aircrafts (RPAs), also known as drones. The Ministry of Defense has issued a Request For Information (RFI) to Indian companies. Among these, 10 drones are for plains and 10 are for high-altitude regions. This clearly indicates the Army’s intention to enhance monitoring on both the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

Post Operation Sindhur, the Army's use of drones has seen a significant increase. In this operation, drones played a critical role in real-time monitoring, maintaining territorial control, and threat detection. Now, drones have become essential tools in challenging or disputed terrains where deploying manned aircraft or helicopters is perilous and complicated.

Officials mention that the lessons learned from recent operations, evolving warfare tactics, and increasing drone activities from across borders have prompted this move. The Army aims to avoid temporary purchases, instead focusing on establishing a robust indigenous tactical drone fleet.

This procurement falls under DAP-2020 regulations, emphasizing Make in India. The Army seeks drones from Indian firms equipped with ground control and support systems. The RFI's objective is to identify which Indian companies are capable of delivering. Following this, specific requirements will be set, and procurement pathways defined.

Moving forward, the Army intends to integrate drones into its future battle strategies as a central component. Ensuring consistent Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) on borders will enhance troop safety. This initiative signifies the Indian Army's readiness for modern warfare, where drones now play a pivotal role.
