Boeing's six Apache AH-64E attack helicopters were supposed to arrive for the Indian Army. The wait continues. They were expected in two batches. Boeing has now revealed the cause of the delay. This deal is four years old. The deal for six helicopters was worth ₹6716 crores.
On August 8, an Apache helicopter crashed in Alabama, USA. The instructor pilot was killed. The second pilot was injured. Although the exact cause of the accident is unknown, it is believed that the helicopter's electrical power generators failed, causing smoke to fill the cockpit.
Due to this, Boeing has temporarily halted the delivery of all new helicopters until this issue is thoroughly investigated. India's delivery was scheduled for May-June this year, but it has not been completed yet. According to
, the chances of receiving them by the end of this year are slim.
Let's explore the power of this helicopter... The Apache helicopter boasts advanced digital connectivity, featuring a Joint Tactical Information Distribution System. It's equipped with face gear transmission. This enhances its speed, climb rate, and payload capacity. It supports C, D, L, and Ku frequency bands for communication.
It can also control drones, enabling a single helicopter to manage multiple drones, thus devastating enemy areas. It requires two pilots to operate. The length is 58.2 feet, and the height is 12.8 feet. Without weapons or fuel, it weighs 5165 kg. During flights, it can carry up to 10,433 kg.
It is powered by two General Electric T700-GE-701 turbo shaft engines, generating 1409 kW of power. The main rotor, with four blades, has a diameter of 48 feet. It can reach a maximum speed of 293 km/hr, typically cruising at 265 km/hr. Pilots do not commonly fly it at its top speed of 365 km/hr.
With a Longbow radar mast, it can fly within a combat range of 476 km and has a ferry range of 1896 km. It can ascend to a maximum height of 20,000 feet. The helicopter is equipped with a 30 mm M230 chain gun capable of firing 1,200 rounds per minute. Additionally, it has four pylons to mount stores. A twin missile pack of AIM-92 Stingers can be attached to the wingtips.
The Apache Attack Helicopter can be armed with 70 mm Hydra-70, CRV, APKWS, and air-to-ground rockets. Variants of the AGM-114 Hellfire missile can be installed, along with air-to-air Stinger, AGM-65 Maverick, and Spike missiles.
