India Today Conclave 2025:
Speaking at the India Today Conclave, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, announced plans to pass the Waqf Amendment Bill in the second part of this budget session. He highlighted that the Waqf Board holds the largest volume of private property globally, from which underprivileged Muslims derive no benefit. The Minister emphasized the necessity of this bill for the welfare of economically disadvantaged Muslims.
Rijiju stated, 'The forthcoming parliamentary session is crucial as it will witness the passage of several historic bills. Swift passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill is essential as it promises solutions to multiple issues. The significance of Waqf properties is considerable.'
He further explained that not only in our country but worldwide, the Waqf Board holds the most private land. Many believe it's the third largest after Defense and Railways, which is incorrect. Railway land is public, serving commuters, and defense land belongs to the nation. Calling Waqf the third largest property is misleading due to its private nature.
Rijiju remarked, 'Nowhere else do minorities hold such vast land assets. Despite claims of widespread poverty among Muslims, holding significant land signifies that it is not serving their benefit. The Waqf Bill is vital for looking after poor Muslims, and its passage will greatly assist them.'
Addressing opposition criticism, Rijiju asserted the bill is solely for minority community benefit, dismissing any opposition as political maneuvering. He also noted that partner parties of the Bharatiya Janata Party are not opposing the bill.
Former state developments and Rijiju's perspective?
Kiren Rijiju highlighted that the northeastern states are abundant in economic opportunities, with limitless potential within these regions.
'Over the past decade, substantial infrastructure has been developed in the northeastern states, fostering a heartfelt connection between Delhi and these regions. This strong decade-long foundation will soon propel the northeast among India's key regions,' he remarked.
During the session, host Rajdeep Sardesai questioned Rijiju about infrastructural advancements while educational and healthcare growth seem lagging, compelling residents to seek treatment in Delhi.
In response, Rijiju acknowledged significant progress over a decade in infrastructure and predicted future strength in education and healthcare.
At the Conclave, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang shared plans to initiate direct train services to Gangtok by 2027, aiming for improved connectivity, which will greatly enhance tourist access to Sikkim. Construction of a train network from Assam to Sikkim is underway.
