Indian athletes are showcasing a stellar performance at the Paris Paralympics 2024. On September 6 (Friday), Indian para-athlete Praveen Kumar (T44) clinched the gold medal in the men's high jump-T64 event, breaking the Asian record. This marks India’s sixth gold at the Paris Paralympics. It's the first time India has won six gold medals in the Paralympic Games, surpassing its previous record of five golds from the Tokyo Paralympics.

India Ranks 14th in Medal Tally

21-year-old Praveen triumphed with a best jump of 2.08 meters to secure the gold medal. In the same event, Derek Lockident of the USA won silver while Temurbek Giyazov of Uzbekistan took the bronze. Derek's best jump was 2.06 meters, while Temurbek’s best for the bronze was 2.03 meters. Born with a smaller leg, Praveen hails from Noida.

The T64 category features athletes with a slight reduction in movement below the knee or with one or both legs missing below the knee.

With Praveen Kumar’s gold medal, India's medal count at the Paris Paralympics 2024 has risen to 26, with six golds, eight silvers, and twelve bronzes, placing India 14th in the medal tally. This is India's 14th medal in athletics at the ongoing Paralympic Games.

India has showcased its best performance ever at the Paralympic Games. In the Tokyo Paralympics 2020, India won five golds, eight silvers, and six bronzes, totaling 19 medals, which was India’s best performance at the time. Para-athlete Murlikant Petkar won India’s first medal at the Paralympic Games in 1972, whose life was recently depicted in the film 'Chandu Champion'.
