Delhi-NCR’s first monsoon shower brought relief but also chaos as roads were inundated following heavy rains. At Delhi Airport's Terminal - 1 parking area, the collapse of a roof resulted in one fatality and six injuries.
In the early hours amid heavy rainfall, a line of vehicles at Terminal 1 was disrupted by the sudden collapse of the parking roof, causing chaos and prompt calls for emergency services.
The Chief Fire Officer of Delhi reported that six individuals are injured and admitted to Medanta Airport. He declared, 'We received a message at 0650 from ADO Ravinder that a shed at the airport collapsed, trapping and injuring eight people who have been rescued by PCR/CATS and taken to Medanta hospital, and one person was found deceased.'

Fire department officials stated that they were notified about the roof collapse around 5:30 AM and dispatched at least four fire engines to control the situation. The airport has three terminals: T1, T2, and T3. T1 operates exclusively domestic flights.
Support Beam Collapse Injures 6 People
Officials from Delhi Fire Services (DFS) shared that on Friday morning, during intense rainfall, a section of the ceiling at Delhi Airport's Terminal-1 fell onto parked cars including taxis, injuring six individuals. A search operation was conducted to ensure that no one else was trapped. Authorities reported that in addition to the roof sheet; support beams had also fallen, damaging vehicles in the pickup and drop-off area of the terminal.

The injured were hospitalized, and one was extracted from a car pinned down by an iron beam. After receiving a call about the incident at around 5:30 AM, DFS dispatched three fire engines to the airport. Civil Aviation Minister K. Ramamohan Naidu stated in a post on X that he is personally monitoring the situation and that the injured have been hospitalized.
Check-In Counters Closed
Following the accident, Delhi Airport stated, 'Part of Terminal 1 collapsed due to heavy rains today. Several people were injured, assistance is being provided, and medical aid is being administered. As a result, all flights operating from Terminal 1 have been temporarily canceled. Check-in counters have been closed for safety reasons. We regret the inconvenience caused by this incident.'
28 Flights Affected
Due to the accident, operations from Terminal-1 have been temporarily halted, and check-in counters stopped as a precaution. Rescue operations are underway with fire engines on site. So far, a total of 28 flights have been canceled, all due to adverse weather since midnight. In addition, 12 incoming flights have been affected.

Post the rain in the national capital region, numerous areas in Delhi and the surrounding areas experienced severe waterlogging. Vehicles were seen nearly submerged in rainwater at some locations. Safdarjung recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours until 8:30 AM today.
