The arriving police had to resort to a baton charge to restore order.
Located right off the main road in the Malkapet area, the restaurant that made the free haleem offer was immediately overrun. The congested crowd caused a significant traffic jam. The restaurant's owner was taken aback by the turnout and had to call the police for assistance. The police first tried to calm the crowd but eventually had to proceed with a baton charge when the situation remained unresolved. Following the incident, the police have registered a case against the restaurant owner.
Free Haleem Causes Uproar
According to the news agency PTI, the restaurant had offered free haleem to the public on the first day of the sacred Muslim month of Ramadan, but the crowd became uncontrollable, forcing the police to be called. A video released by the agency shows hundreds of people standing outside the restaurant, waiting for their free haleem and causing a commotion. Reports indicate the incident took place around two in the morning.
Lack of Permission from Police
Media reports suggest that the inspector of Malkapet mentioned that a case would be registered against the restaurant owner for disrupting traffic. He said that the police were not informed about the free haleem event. The owner did not seek permission, even though a large turnout was anticipated.
