The region has been on edge since October 7 of last year, following Hamas’ surprise guerrilla attack on Israel, which resulted in hundreds of deaths and numerous hostages. This attack was in retaliation to Israeli strikes in Tehran and Beirut on July 27, which claimed 12 young lives in Golan Heights.

Prior to this, Iran unleashed a barrage of 330 drones and missiles on Israel, following Israel’s attack on the Damascus consulate, killing 13 people. Iranian state media then warned that future attacks would be even more dangerous.

Possible Iran Attack Strategies...

The doomsday clock is ticking. Iran could contemplate three potential attack strategies to inflict significant damage on Israel while avoiding direct confrontation with the United States.

First Scenario: Massive Missile and Drone Barrage...

A significant challenge for Iran is breaching Israel’s air defense system. The 330 drones and missiles launched by Iran in April saw only a few reaching Israeli soil, with 90% neutralized in the air. According to the American think tank, Institute of the Study of War, Iran won’t rely on a single-direction drone-missile attack.

Iran will likely coordinate with its allies—Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iraq—to launch simultaneous attacks, overwhelming Israel’s air defenses. This would limit America's and Israel’s response or defensive capabilities. Hezbollah drones, for instance, could reach Haifa in 15 minutes and Tel Aviv in 40 minutes.

Second Scenario: Simultaneous Attacks on American Forces...

Defense experts predict that Iranian key figures stationed in Syria and Iraq will not only target Israel but also launch fatal attacks on U.S. forces, especially in northern Syria. Reports from Syrian media indicate that Houthi rebels from Yemen have infiltrated Syria through Iraq and are positioned in eastern and southern Syria. This would engage U.S. forces, preventing them from aiding Israel. Israel’s air defense system could be overwhelmed by thousands of drones and missiles.

Third Scenario: Continual Attacks Over Several Days...

Iran and its allies might sustain a barrage of drone and missile attacks over several days, adjusting their strategy based on the efficacy of each wave. Iranian media also speculates that these allies might conspire to assassinate prominent Israeli leaders to avenge Haniyeh’s death.

It is clear that Iran and its allies cannot inflict significant harm on Israel, as they stand no chance against U.S. firepower. The U.S. military maintains a robust presence in the Middle East, with over 60 bases, garrisons, and foreign facilities spread across the region.

Additionally, there are smaller combat outposts in countries like Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and the UAE. In June last year, the United States increased its troop count in the Middle East to 30,000, a number that continues to grow.

The United States’ amphibious groups and carrier strike groups include 12,000 sailors and marines, ready to respond to any attacks. These forces are stationed in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, and the Mediterranean Sea. This week, the U.S. further bolstered its Middle East presence with additional fighter squadrons to provide enhanced defensive air support for Israel. Ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers are also deployed.
