Hate Speech Case: Abbas Ansari Sentenced to 2 Years, ₹3000 Fine

In Mau, Uttar Pradesh, during the 2022 assembly elections, Subhaspa MLA Abbas Ansari was convicted by the court for delivering an inflammatory speech. He was sentenced to two years in prison and fined 3,000 rupees. This sentencing was announced by Chief Judicial Magistrate KP Singh in the MP-MLA court of Mau district.

In the same case, co-accused Mansoor Ansari was sentenced to six months in prison and fined 1,000 rupees. Abbas Ansari, the MLA from Mau and leader of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), has been found guilty of hate speech by the court. The MP-MLA court in Mau has delivered the verdict.

According to information, this case dates back to March 3, 2022, when during the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Abbas Ansari threatened officials with dire consequences at a public meeting held in the Paharpur ground in Mau. The provocative statement sparked opposition, and Gangaram Bind, the then sub-inspector of Kotwali police station, lodged an FIR against him.

Under which sections was the case registered?

An FIR was filed against Abbas Ansari under the following six sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC): Section 506 (Criminal Intimidation), Section 171F (Undue Influence at Elections), Section 186 (Obstructing Public Servant), Section 189 (Threat of Injury to a Public Servant), Section 153A (Promoting Enmity between groups), and Section 120B (Criminal Conspiracy).

Hearings for the case, registered under these sections, were ongoing in the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Dr. KP Singh in Mau, which has now found Abbas Ansari guilty. This case holds significance as Abbas Ansari is not only the son of former powerful MP Mukhtar Ansari but is also the current MLA of the Mau Sadar seat.
