In a significant political development, five councilors from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi have switched allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva welcomed Ramchandra, Pawan Seharawat, Mamta Pawan, Sugandha Bidhuri, and Manju Nirmal to the BJP at the party's state office on Sunday. Delhi Congress President Devendra Yadav termed this defection a sign of the AAP government's failure.

Yadav commented that these councilors left because they didn't see a future with AAP, as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has failed to solve Delhi's problems. This political shift has heated up discussions about the impact of 'Operation Lotus' on the MCD.

A Shift in the Standing Committee's Dynamics

The defection of these five councilors has altered the dynamics of the MCD's most powerful standing committee. The opposition BJP now has nine members in this 18-member committee. Two members were already chosen, and the party had a majority in five zones (Shahdara North & South, Keshavpuram, Najafgarh, and Civil Lines). With seven members already there, the recent switch gives BJP a clear majority in the Central and Narela zones. Ramchandra and Pawan Seharawat come from Narela while the other three are from the Central zone.

On the contrary, AAP retains the majority in only five zones (South, West, Rohini, City Sadar-Paharganj, and Karolbag). AAP has already elected three standing committee members, and five more members will be elected from these zones, reaching only eight members in the standing committee, one less than BJP. While AAP retains the mayor's chair, the BJP now holds significant operational power.

Impact on MCD Functioning

This shift in the standing committee will greatly impact the MCD's functioning. Despite an AAP mayor, administrative and financial approvals now strongly favor BJP, making them powerful stakeholders. The opposition BJP, with its majority, will drive the core decisions, influencing Delhi's administration and governance.

Power Struggle in MCD

The ongoing tussle between the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor (LG) is well-known. As BJP gains majority control in the standing committee, another power center emerges within MCD, likely leading to intensified power games, potentially affecting the upcoming assembly elections.

Assembly Elections Impact

The Delhi assembly elections are scheduled for early next year. Commenting on the defectors, BJP President Virendra Sachdeva criticized AAP's governance, claiming ten years of stalled development. The councilors cited their disillusionment with AAP's corruption and their admiration for PM Modi's commitment as reasons for their defection.
