Temperatures soar above 62°C... Dubai reels under extreme heat, why is this desert city so hot?

On July 16, Dubai recorded a temperature of 62.22 degrees Celsius at 3 PM. This deadly heat was registered at Dubai International Airport. Despite the temperature dropping to 53.9 degrees Celsius in the evening, such heat can be lethal at any time.

The temperature in Dubai on the afternoon of July 16, 2024, was nothing short of infernal. At the Dubai International Airport, it was 144 degrees Fahrenheit, which translates to 62.44 degrees Celsius. By 5 PM, it had dipped to 53.9 degrees Celsius. But is such intense heat suitable for any city or its residents?

At the time this temperature was recorded, the air itself was scorching. The air temperature was 42 degrees Celsius, with 85% humidity. This combination resulted in a temperature of 62.22 degrees Celsius, indicating that Dubai was experiencing Wet Bulb Temperature conditions. This kind of climate can be lethal, making survival extremely challenging.

During summers, temperatures in Dubai typically soar past 40 degrees Celsius. Enduring such heat is a significant challenge. This summer has been exceptionally hot worldwide. The extreme humidity has suffocated the entire Gulf region.

The Deadly Duo of Heat and Humidity

When relative humidity combines with high temperatures, the heat feels even more intense. So, even if the temperature is 40-42 degrees Celsius, it can feel like 55-60 degrees Celsius in such a humid environment. The deadly mixture of heat and humidity in the Gulf countries can be severe. The human body sweats profusely in these conditions, leading to dehydration and respiratory issues.

What is Wet Bulb Temperature and How It Worsens Conditions?

By calculating both temperature and relative humidity together, one can derive the Wet Bulb Temperature or the Heat Index of a specific location. This measurement reveals both the temperature and the humid heatwave. Wet Bulb Temperature involves the cooling effect from water vapor in the air under specific pressure conditions.

The human body continually sweats to stay cool. When temperatures soar, this mechanism is crucial for protection. However, in extreme heat, the body's cooling process slows down, leading to potential heatstroke or death. Internationally, the threshold for Wet Bulb Temperature is set between 30 to 35 degrees Celsius. Exceeding this range almost guarantees mortality.
