Doctors from RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata decided to end their sit-in outside the Police Headquarters on Tuesday. They mentioned that while they will no longer protest at the Police Headquarters, their overall agitation will continue.
Protest March on Monday
Junior doctors had organized a protest march on Monday, demanding justice for the rape and murder case of a lady doctor at RG Kar Medical College. Doctors from various medical colleges participated in this rally. They marched to the Kolkata Police Headquarters at Lalbazar, demanding the resignation of Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.
What Are the Doctors Alleging?
The doctors allege that the police were negligent during the violence that took place at the medical college on August 14. To halt the rally midway, Kolkata Police had set up barricades on BB Ganguly Street. Following this, the doctors participating in the protest stated that their rally was peaceful and that their representatives wanted to meet the Police Commissioner. They demanded that their rally be allowed to proceed to the Police Headquarters, but the police did not allow it to progress. Consequently, the junior doctors sat down on the street and began chanting anti-police slogans.

The protesting doctors also raised slogans demanding severe punishment for the criminals involved in the rape and murder of the lady doctor at RG Kar Medical College. They accuse the police of not taking adequate steps during the investigation of the incident that occurred on August 9. This was why the High Court had to transfer the case to the CBI. Moreover, the police did not take any substantial actions during the violence and vandalism that happened at the medical college.
