In Punjab, significant political news emerged from sources that BJP state president Sunil Jakhar had resigned from his position just before the panchayat elections. However, the party has refuted the resignation news. A senior party leader stated that there has been no such change within the party.
In recent days, Jakhar has been maintaining a distance from crucial state executive meetings. Sunil Jakhar has remained silent on the resignation matter. It was said that he was upset with Ravneet Singh Bittu being made a Union Minister despite losing the Lok Sabha elections. Bittu has been sent to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan by the BJP.
It should be noted that a significant change occurred in Punjab BJP just a year before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The party appointed former Congress leader Sunil Jakhar as the head of its Punjab unit. Jakhar, one of the prominent leaders of Punjab Congress, joined the BJP in May 2022 after Congress's defeat in the Punjab Assembly elections. He joined the saffron party in the presence of the national president, JP Nadda.
In the past, Jakhar has served as an MLA from Abohar twice and as an MP from the Gurdaspur constituency. He also worked as the Pradesh Congress Committee president for four years until 2021. Ashwani Sharma, the MLA from Pathankot, has served as the state president twice, from 2010 to 2013, and from 2019 to present.
