In Delhi, a tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening during the rain, where water flooded the basement of RAU'S IAS Coaching Center in Old Rajendra Nagar. The water poured in so quickly that students couldn’t react in time. Unfortunately, three students drowned due to the flooding. Currently, an investigation is underway regarding this mishap. The police have arrested the coaching center owner, Abhishek Gupta, and the coordinator, both of whom are now in 14-day judicial custody.
Following this tragedy, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken strict measures. MCD sealed 13 coaching centers running illegally in basements, posting notices on their premises as well. MCD officials visited several coaching centers in the Rajendra Nagar area, inspecting and taking necessary actions. Mayor Shelly Oberoi informed that all coaching centers operating illegally in basements in Rajendra Nagar are being sealed and this operation will be extended across Delhi as needed. By late night, 13 coaching centers were sealed.
Mayor Shelly Oberoi stated that following the serious incident, directions were given to MCD officials on Sunday to seal all basement coaching centers violating building bylaws and norms. Oberoi mentioned that the sealing process of illegal coaching centers in Rajendra Nagar has begun. Several centers were sealed for violating rules and this drive will continue citywide as needed. Students Protest After Losing Peers
The images from the coaching center in Old Rajendra Nagar are startling, revealing a grim tale of a failed system responsible for the deaths of three students. These students came from far to study but fell victim to negligence. Now, their fellow students are out on the streets, demanding justice through protests. This incident has shocked everyone in the capital. The students’ outrage is visibly fueling the protests.
MCD in Action Mode Post Students’ Demise
It was found during the investigation that the basement of this coaching center was originally approved for storage but was being used as a library. Alarmingly, there were insufficient arrangements for student evacuation in case of an emergency. No exit was available at the back of the basement. Post-incident, the local sewer and drains are being cleaned since Sunday morning, and illegal coaching centers in basements are being sealed. Preventative actions like these might have avoided such fatal consequences.
Questions Arise After the Incident
The tragic incident in Old Rajendra Nagar raises several questions: Who granted permission for the basement library? If there was no permission, how was the library functioning? What preparations did MCD make for the monsoon, and whose negligence led to the deaths of three students? Notably, Shraya Yadav from UP, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nevin Dalvin from Kerala drowned in the basement of RAU'S IAS Coaching Center.
