The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has revealed its candidates for the elections of Delhi's Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The party has nominated Raja Iqbal Singh for Mayor and Jai Bhagwan Yadav for Deputy Mayor. The announcement was made on Monday by Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva.
During the announcement, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva took a dig at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), stating that those promising to clean Delhi by taking control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have only furthered corruption. According to Sachdeva, the AAP is now trying to hide from its past promises.
The Aam Aadmi Party's declaration to not field a candidate for the Mayor's election prompted a response from Delhi BJP's President, who pointed out their lack of numerical strength. Unable to gather sufficient support, it seems they are withdrawing from the electoral process. Notably, today marks the final day for nominations for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions, and with AAP out of the race, the BJP candidates are set for an unchallenged election.
The elections for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are scheduled for April 25. However, just hours before the BJP's announcement, AAP held a press conference with former Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj and former Chief Minister Atishi, announcing their decision not to field candidates. Saurabh Bhardwaj accused the BJP of attempting to coerce and bribe AAP Councillors to grab power.
Understanding the Municipal House Number Game
When it comes to the numbers game in the municipal house for the Mayor election, BJP significantly holds the upper hand. Political parties need a total of 132 votes to secure the Mayor's position, and BJP, with its MPs and legislators combined, commands 135 votes. In contrast, AAP's total strength only reaches 119.
