A major train accident was averted late at night in Kanpur. A conspiracy was hatched to derail the Kalindi Express by placing gas cylinders on the track. The driver applied the brakes and stopped the train, informing the authorities. Petrol-filled glass bottles, matches, explosives, and other items were found at the scene. Currently, the UP ATS and other agencies have begun their investigations. However, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred in or around Kanpur. There have been two to three similar incidents in the past few months.

Earlier, on the night of 16-17 August, 22 coaches, including the engine of the Sabarmati Express (19168), derailed on the Kanpur-Jhansi route. Fortunately, no casualties occurred in this accident. The train's driver stated that the accident was caused by a boulder hitting the engine. This incident is also under investigation.

In Kanpur, eight years earlier, there was also a conspiracy to topple the Sabarmati Express similar to the Indore-Patna Express, which resulted in the loss of 152 lives. An accused caught from Bihar revealed that he derailed the Indore-Patna Express for money. On the night of 16-17 August, the Sabarmati Express, traveling from Patna to Ahmedabad, was targeted between Govindpuri and Bhimsen stations at 2:30 AM with a 3-feet long rail track piece placed before the engine.

On the night of 24-25 August, a major train accident was averted in Farrukhabad due to the vigilance of the loco pilot. Some miscreants attempted to derail the Kasganj-Farrukhabad Express train (number 05389) by placing a heavy wooden log on the track. The log got stuck in the engine, causing the train to halt for about 25 minutes. Upon receiving the news, railway personnel arrived at the scene and removed the log.

A week later, near Bhatausa station in Farrukhabad, police uncovered a conspiracy to derail a train by placing a wooden log on the track and arrested two youths (Kamlesh and Mohan). They confessed to the police they wanted fame by toppling a train. Fear-stricken, they were planning to escape to Delhi but were caught by the police before doing so.

On 23 August 2024, an accident was also averted in Shamli District. Four places on the Delhi Saharanpur railway line near the Shamli bypass, about 50 meters apart, had nearly 25 to 30 pandrol clips removed. A student who happened to be roaming the area informed the railway about it. Upon knowing, the railway authorities quickly reinstalled the pandrol clips, repairing the track in time.

Obviously, had there been that many pandrol clips separated from the track and a train arrived at that moment, an accident could have occurred. Thankfully, the track was repaired well in time.

Now a Conspiracy to Derail the Kalindi Express

According to Kanpur police and RPF, around 8.30 PM on the night of 8 September, the Kalindi Express collided with a filled LPG cylinder placed on the railway track between Barratpur and Bilhaur on the Anwar Ganj-Kasganj railway line. The loco pilot reported seeing something suspicious on the track, applied the brakes, but the object still hit the train, causing a loud noise. The driver stopped the train and informed the guard and other people.

Upon receiving the news, the railway superintendent of Anwar Ganj station, RPF, and other railway officials arrived at the scene. Upon investigation, a cylinder, petrol bottle, matches, and explosives were found in the bushes. Forensic teams also examined the site and sent the suspect materials for testing.

For the investigation of this event, teams from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and other agencies arrived and started their investigation. ATS units from Kanpur and Lucknow gathered evidence from the scene. Additional Commissioner Harish Chandra stated that those responsible would be caught and all angles of the investigation are being explored.

Police are inspecting if any foreign entities or groups were involved in placing the cylinder on the tracks, considering the large influx of people at Hazrat Badiuddin Zinda Shah's shrine in Makhanpur, Bilhaur. Also being investigated is the sweet box where petrol and explosives were found, and the spot where the matches were discovered. ADCP LIU has also formed a team for this investigation.

To uncover the matter, five police teams have been formed. Besides, police have detained two history-sheeters for questioning.
