In Chennai, a woman went to the police station to lodge a harassment complaint. The woman alleged that auto-rickshaw drivers were bothering her, but the police did not register her complaint. Instead, they arrested her on charges of prostitution. Following this event, the Tamil Nadu State Women's Commission recommended action. The commission has called for a departmental inquiry against two police officers.

According to information, the Tamil Nadu State Women’s Commission wrote a letter to the Tambaram Police Commissioner. It mentioned that a woman from Uthiramerur had complained to the commission about calling the Tambaram Police Station on August 9, 2023, to report harassment. The next day, on August 10, 2023, she personally went to the police station.

The woman told the commission that the police did not register her case at the station. Instead, the police took her photo on a mobile phone. When she protested, a police officer used abusive language. On further protest, the sub-inspector threatened to arrest her on false charges. Subsequently, she was arrested on false charges and kept in judicial custody for five months.

The woman informed the commission that the police registered a case against her under charges of prostitution. The State Women’s Commission found that proper procedures were not followed during her arrest. The commission recommended a departmental investigation against Inspector Charles and Sub-Inspector Durga. It also suggested compensating the woman. The State Women’s Commission has demanded strict action in this matter.
