On the 92nd anniversary of the Indian Air Force, a spectacular air show was held on Marina Beach in Chennai. Despite the oppressive humidity, thousands of people thronged to the beach to witness the event. Unfortunately, three individuals succumbed to dehydration and 230 needed medical attention.
The air show began at 11 AM with eager spectators gathering from afar. The roads of Chennai were brimming with cars, leading to severe traffic congestion.
Marina Beach was teeming with crowds. As the event concluded, the throngs attempted to leave towards Kamarajar Salai, causing a complete traffic standstill. Exhausted by the heat and the crowds, many resorted to resting on the roadside.
In a bid to shield themselves from the blazing sun, many spectators clutched umbrellas on the sandy beach. Leaving Marina Beach post-event turned into a significant challenge.
According to PTI, a swell of people crowded the Anna Square bus stop near the venue. A senior police officer reported that nearly a dozen individuals fainted due to a stampede-like situation and heat; they received treatment at a government hospital. The police had to take essential steps to clear traffic, ensuring that three ambulances reached the hospital.
Annamalai, the President of the Tamil Nadu BJP, expressed shock at the lack of safety measures during the air show organized by the Indian Air Force on Chennai Marina Beach. He criticized the DMK government for not providing adequate facilities and transport for public safety, calling it a failure of Chief Minister Stalin's administration.
The main roads connected by Marina faced traffic jams, with vehicles stuck for hours. V. K. Sridhar from Velachery mentioned the challenge of reaching Chintadripet via MRTS train, given the overwhelming crowd at Velachery Station coming to witness the air show.
