Until now, counterfeiting government-issued identification and citizenship documents posed significant challenges for cybercriminals. But with OpenAI's ChatGPT, this task has become surprisingly easier. The latest AI model, GPT-40, which recently gained attention with its Studio Ghibli-style illustrations, is now capable of generating lifelike Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, passports, and even voter ID cards.

Effortlessly Crafting Fake IDs

Although this AI model doesn't create documents using details of real individuals, it does produce counterfeit documents for well-known personalities. This raises concerns about its potential use in facilitating cybercrime.

An experiment conducted by India Today with a request for a fake Aadhaar card from GPT-40 yielded astonishing results. The document appeared so authentic that even experts found minor flaws tricky to spot.

The scope extends beyond just Aadhaar cards. This model can generate an entire series of fake IDs, including PAN cards, passports, and voter IDs, all consistent in format and details. This implies anyone could use this AI to create incredibly realistic fake identities.

When asked to create documents under the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the model initially declined due to security measures. However, a slight alteration in the prompt prompted the AI to bypass its warning mechanism and produce a realistic-looking voter ID card, complete with name and photo.

GPT-40 can also generate fake payment receipts. A prompt depicting a INR 100 Paytm transaction displayed an image so authentic-looking that distinguishing between real and fake becomes nearly impossible. In another incident, Twitter user @godofprompt showcased how this AI can create a fake yet realistic-looking Stanford University Bachelor’s degree, one that never actually existed.

Document forgery has long been a tool for fraudsters to gain trust and deceive individuals. With the advent of generative AI, access has expanded exponentially. Creating fake documents is now faster and easier than ever. Some social media users have also questioned how OpenAI accessed authentic Aadhaar and PAN cards possibly used to train GPT-40.

To prevent misuse, OpenAI asserts that it has incorporated C2PA metadata in images generated by GPT-40, allowing for easier identification of AI-created photos.
