On Sunday in Maharajganj, Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh, a tumultuous situation unfolded as a Durga Puja immersion procession passed in front of a Muslim community household. What started with stone pelting quickly escalated to shooting, leaving two individuals critically injured. Tragically, one succumbed to the injuries during treatment at the hospital. Following the incident, an enraged crowd resorted to arson, setting vehicles and houses ablaze, leading to the suspension of the statue immersion. The Maharajganj area is now heavily patrolled by police.

The incident occurred in Rehua Mansoor village under the Hardi police station jurisdiction. On Sunday evening, as the Durga idol immersion procession reached Maharajganj market, participants chanted slogans near Abdul Hamid's house. Suddenly, unidentified individuals started pelting stones at the idols. Amidst the chaos, some miscreants fired shots, injuring Ram Gopal Mishra (22) and another person from Rehua Mansoor village.

'Immersion of Idols Halted'

The severely injured were rushed to a district hospital but, unfortunately, one succumbed at Bahraich Medical College. News of the fatality sparked outrage, leading to further destructive actions by those in the procession, reportedly resulting in the burning of four houses. Police force and PAC personnel swiftly arrived, temporarily halting idol immersion.

In response, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated on social media platform 'X,' 'Those disrupting peace in Bahraich’s Mahsi will not be spared. Security for all is guaranteed, but stringent action will be taken against miscreants and those whose negligence caused the incident. The idol immersion will continue. Authorities have been directed to ensure the smooth completion of immersions by engaging with religious organizations on-site.'
