Former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi via a letter to declare the sacred Golden Temple (Sri Harmandir Sahib) as an international 'No-War Zone'. He emphasized that it is a demand not only political in nature but represents a step towards safeguarding a symbol of universal peace and humanity.
Randhawa wrote in his letter that Sri Harmandir Sahib is not merely a geographic location, but the soul of Sikhism. It is a source of love, compassion, unity, and peace that spiritually connects millions worldwide. He remarked that the role of Sri Amritsar Sahib is akin to Mecca for Muslims and the Vatican for Christians.
In the letter, he emphasized that with escalating military tensions and conflicts around the world, the Sikh spirit of 'Sarbat Da Bhala' (well-being of everyone) should be preserved globally. Considering the geopolitical position of Sri Amritsar Sahib amidst India-Pakistan tensions, he expressed concern that any future military conflict could endanger this holy site.
A Spiritual and Humanitarian Appeal, Not Political
Randhawa clarified in his letter that his demand is not for a political sovereignty like the Vatican, but an appeal for Sri Amritsar to achieve international spiritual importance and incorporate protective measures to keep it forever away from war and violence. He wrote, “This appeal is not just about safeguarding the soul of one religion but is an endeavor to protect a symbol of peace for the entire humanity.”

Appeal to the Government of India
In his letter, Randhawa requested the central government to undertake necessary diplomatic and legislative measures and collaborate with international bodies to declare Sri Amritsar Sahib as a 'No-War Zone'. He stated that it is not only a moral obligation of the Sikh community but of the entire nation and world to ensure the protection of such sacred sites.
What is a 'No-War Zone'?
A No-War Zone is an area formally committed to being free from any military activities, conflicts, or wars. Such areas are safeguarded due to their unique moral, cultural, religious, or humanitarian significance, even during war times. Its vision is to prevent any threat to the sanctity, peace, and safety of the area, irrespective of global geographic or political turmoil.
For instance, Vatican City, Mecca, or certain hospitals and refugee camps designated by the United Nations fall under this ideology. Recognition of a No War Zone is generally achieved through international institutions, special treaties, or joint efforts of nations.
