The accused in the brutality against a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, has been sent to 14 days of police custody. After being arrested under Sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the police presented the accused in Sealdah court, requesting police custody for further interrogation.
The judge accepted the prosecution's request and sent the accused to 14 days of police custody till August 23. The body of the victim was found inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College in North Kolkata on Friday. The initial post-mortem report indicated that she was sexually assaulted before being murdered. She was subjected to barbaric treatment.
Police Traced Suspect through a Bluetooth Earbud
Police revealed that the arrested suspect is an outsider who used to frequent most of the departments in the medical college. His activities were highly suspicious, and he seemed directly involved in the crime. A torn piece of a Bluetooth earbud found at the scene led the police to the suspect. Several doctors also identified the criminal through CCTV footage.
The Accused's Role as a Civic Volunteer
Sources revealed that the suspect, named Sanjay Roy, is a civic volunteer. These volunteers are contractual employees who assist policemen in traffic management and help the police during major state festivals and at locations with unauthorized vehicle parking. Such individuals work in close cooperation with the police.

Police Searching for Accomplices
A police officer stated, "We are now trying to ascertain who else was involved with the suspect. A necessary medical examination of the suspect may be conducted. In connection with the female doctor's death, police interrogated two intern doctors on Friday night. The deceased was a second-year student in the Medicine Department and was on duty Thursday night. There were multiple injury marks on her body.
Body Found in Heinous Condition
According to the autopsy report, the victim's eyes and mouth were bleeding. Her face had injuries, and a nail was embedded. There was also bleeding from her private parts. She had injuries on her stomach, left leg, neck, right hand, pinky finger, and lips. Her neck bone was broken. It's suspected that she was killed after being raped. The incident is believed to have occurred between 3 and 6 AM on Friday.

Mamata Banerjee's Reaction to the Incident
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reacted to the incident, saying, "This is a personal loss for me. The anger and demands of the resident doctors are justified, and I support them. The police have also agreed to their demands. I was in Jhargram yesterday, but I was keeping track of all the events. I have spoken to the victim's family and assured them of appropriate action."
'Culprits Will Be Hanged if Necessary'
The Chief Minister added, "I have directed that this case be taken to a fast-track court. If necessary, the accused will be hanged, although I am not an advocate of the death penalty. However, the culprits should receive the maximum punishment. One suspect has already been arrested. We have ensured that no doctor protesting against this incident faces any issues."
