The visit of Argentina's football superstar Lionel Messi to Kolkata has sparked a political storm in West Bengal. Following disorder and vandalism at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Salt Lake, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued an apology, expressing her deep distress and shock over the incident. In harsh contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) labeled it an insult to both Bengal and football, directly targeting the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.

On Saturday, Messi attended the stadium as part of his much-celebrated G.O.A.T tour. However, due to presumed mismanagement, he departed the field within just 10 minutes. Football fans who had paid hefty ticket prices were left deeply disappointed. A fraction of the frustrated audience began to protest at the stadium, leading to reports of bottle throwing, hoarding damage, and security forces intervening to manage the escalating situation. Eventually, Messi and other VVIPs were evacuated under tight security.

BJP IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of shedding crocodile tears. He claimed that the chaos and corruption are integral to the working style of the Trinamool government. Malviya argued that the incident disrespected the sentiments of Bengal's people and football enthusiasts. He demanded FIRs against Sports Minister Aroop Biswas and Minister Sujit Bose, their removal from office, and a complete refund of tickets to the spectators.

BJP Demands Resignation of Sports Minister

Similarly, the Bengal unit of BJP declared the event damaging to the state's cultural image, demanding resignations from the Chief Minister and Sports Minister. The party alleged a ticket scam, claiming people were charged between 8,000 and 10,000 rupees, exploiting Messi's visit for political gain.

State Congress President Subhankar Sarkar also criticized the government, stating that the administrative system completely failed, causing Bengal's reputation to suffer on an international scale due to the disorder.

TMC Distances Itself from the Event

In its defense, the Trinamool Congress disassociated itself from the event, claiming that it was organized by a private agency without any involvement from the party. TMC spokesperson Taufeeq Rahman asserted that the party had no role in the proceedings. Party leader Kunal Ghosh called the incident unfortunate, mentioning that the state government has apologized to Messi and formed an investigation committee. Furthermore, he raised suspicion of a conspiracy over the slogans, vandalism, and banners.

Meanwhile, BJP State President Shamik Bhattacharya remarked on the controversy over saffron flags in the stadium, stating nothing unusual about it. Ultimately, the disorder surrounding Messi's visit has transcended sports, emerging as a significant issue in Bengal's politics.

Main Organizer Detained

West Bengal's Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Kumar addressed the media, confirming that the situation was under control and law and order had been restored. Kumar acknowledged that many fans were disappointed as they hoped to see Messi play or spend more time on the field. He also noted that organizers provided written assurance that disappointed ticket holders would receive refunds.

Subsequently, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Javed Shamim confirmed that a formal investigation has commenced. Shamim stated, “At this point, we cannot determine who is responsible. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone found guilty will face consequences.” He also pointed out that the situation around the stadium is now back to normal, with the main organizer detained as part of the inquiry.

Messi Arrives in Hyderabad After Kolkata

It's noteworthy that Kolkata was the first of Messi's three-day Indian tour, with subsequent events planned in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. Though the authorities assert that the situation is now peaceful, the disorganized start has shifted focus from celebration to accountability. Questions loom over the organizers, and fans await the promised refunds.
