The approaching general elections in Bangladesh are shrouded in uncertainty. Manzil Murshid, the President of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, suspects potential delays, with the Election Commission yet to announce the official timeline.
In his statement, Murshid expressed concerns about a conspiracy in the country following August 5, 2024. Despite public pressure, the government hasn't taken steps toward organizing free, fair, and inclusive elections. Concurrently, Dr. Muhammad Yunus assumed interim power, lacking constitutional mandate.
Murshid further revealed that the chief advisor visited London to meet with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting head Tarique Rahman. Their meeting culminated in a joint announcement projecting February elections, but with no formal schedule from the Election Commission.
Lingering Ambiguity in Bangladesh's Election Landscape
The opposition in Bangladesh has persistently accused the government of election manipulation, casting doubt on the prospects for fair elections. Even if elections proceed in February, the questions remain whether they will be truly impartial and inclusive. All eyes are now on the Election Commission.
'Elections Impossible Without Government Support'
Last week, Bangladesh's Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin emphasized that elections without government cooperation are impossible. He asserted the government's central role in the electoral process, stating that conducting elections without its support isn't feasible.
Nasir Uddin reiterated that regardless of the Election Commission's independence, government support is crucial for conducting elections. The Commission requires assistance from law enforcement, administration, and its officials.
Regarding the election schedule, he mentioned, "We will announce the timeline in due course, and you'll know the dates. We have a strategic plan, although I wouldn't term it a roadmap."
Earlier this month, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus had announced a tentative general election scheduled for early April next year.
