Congress lawmaker and Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, launched a sharp critique of the central government's 'Make in India' initiative, labeling it as a bundle of false promises. He asserted that the initiative has utterly failed to boost real manufacturing in the country.

On Friday, Rahul Gandhi visited Nehru Place in Delhi, known as the largest electronics market in the country, and engaged with two local technicians. He pointed out that most mobile and electronic products in India are assembled rather than manufactured here.

He also accused the initiative of failing to deliver the factory boom it promised. "Why is manufacturing at a historically low level today? Why is youth unemployment at a record high? And why has import from China doubled?" he questioned.

Import from China Has Doubled

Rahul Gandhi noted that today, manufacturing contributes merely 14 percent to India's GDP—a record low. Meanwhile, youth unemployment is peaking, and imports from China have doubled. He shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) saying, “'Make in India' promised a factory boom. Then why is manufacturing at a record low, youth unemployment at a record high, and imports from China doubled? Modi only chants slogans, not solutions.”

He mentioned meeting two young technicians, Shivam and Saif, at Nehru Place in Delhi, stating that these talented youths cannot utilize their full potential because India's economic model fails to provide them opportunities.

Rahul Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Modi no longer has new ideas. He claimed that the government’s much-hyped PLI scheme (Production-Linked Incentive Scheme) is being quietly shelved. He wrote on X: “If we don’t produce ourselves, we’ll keep buying from others. India now needs genuine reforms and real financial support to empower domestic producers. It’s time for the country to transform from a market to a manufacturing hub.”

Ground Reality is Different - Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi stated plainly: "The truth is, we merely assemble and import but do not manufacture. And China is capitalizing on this." The Rae Bareli MP highlighted how the surge in imports from China has had a significant impact on local manufacturing capacities and jobs in the country. He branded 'Make in India' as a 'jumla', reinforcing that the ground reality starkly contrasts with the government’s promises.
