In Assam's Morigaon district, early morning tremors were felt on Thursday, registering a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale. The tremors were also felt in Guwahati and other parts of the state. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported the earthquake occurred at 2:25 AM at a depth of 16 kilometers.

Over the past few years, this region has witnessed several major earthquakes such as the 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake with a magnitude of 8.6, and the 1897 Shillong earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1, both recognized among the most devastating in history.

What was the impact of the earthquake?

A senior officer from the Odisha Revenue Department reported no immediate damage to property or casualties. The impact wasn't substantial as the epicenter was located in the Bay of Bengal. Tremors were, however, felt in Paradip, Puri, Berhampur, and a few other places in Odisha.

It's important to note that a magnitude 5 earthquake is considered moderate, potentially causing vibrations, rattling sounds, and minor structural damage.
