Pakistan is struggling to come to terms with their substantial defeat against Team India in Asia Cup 2025. This has led to unruly conduct among the Pakistani players. Former cricketer Mohammad Yousuf recently lashed out, using offensive language against Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav during a television program. Yousuf’s remarks coincide with ICC dismissing Pakistan Cricket Board's appeal, retaining referee Andy Pycroft, despite Pakistan's demands for his removal.
The root of the animosity lies in Captain Yadav’s refusal to shake hands with Pakistani players on September 14 after the match, which was already tense. This cold shoulder didn't sit well with the players.
Pakistan blamed match referee Andy Pycroft and insisted he be replaced, alleging his presence influenced India's refusal for handshakes. ICC, however, completely dismissed these claims after investigation and communicated its findings back to PCB.
Pakistan threatened to boycott the Asia Cup, vowing not to face UAE on Wednesday (September 17) unless the referee was replaced.
Shoaib Akhtar's Take?
Amidst the 'handshake controversy', former pacer Shoaib Akhtar remarked it shouldn’t have come to this. Arguing is common within households, yet Akhtar was visibly hurt by Team India’s refusal to shake hands, citing it went against sportsmanship.
Gautam Gambhir's Directive?
Reports suggest the no-handshake idea came from India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir. Telecom Asia reported Gambhir allegedly advised Indian players not to engage physically with the opponents, urging them to refrain from arguments too. On September 14, India triumphed over Pakistan by seven wickets, securing a berth in Super 4s, whereas Pakistan needs a win against UAE on September 17 to advance.
