In July, an alarming incident occurred at Asha Kiran in Rohini, Delhi, where 14 people lost their lives. Subsequently, the Delhi government ordered a magisterial investigation. Initially, reports indicated 13 deaths, but accounting for a death before 15th July, the total reached 14, including one minor.

Included in the deceased are six women and one minor

Fourteen deaths were reported at the Asha Kiran center in Rohini, operated by the Delhi government. This tragic event included six women and one minor. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time such deaths have been reported over the years. The issue was discussed with Rekha Sharma, the chief of the National Commission for Women, who revealed that such incidents have been recurring annually (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021). Though raised by the former chairperson of the Delhi Commission, no actions were taken.

Stale food is being served at the center: Rekha Sharma

Rekha Sharma shared pictures depicting food contaminated with fungus, with menus featuring items that were never available. The residents suffer from low BMI, and the lack of coolers exacerbates the deaths due to heat. Stale food continues to be served.

NCW demands an audit of the shelters

Rekha Sharma highlighted the need for an audit of this long-operating institution and reviewed its actions. She suggested the necessity of closing the facility if needed, expressing that residents should ideally be in hospitals, not shelters. She emphasized that shelter homes for the mentally ill should not exist; hospitals are more appropriate.

Action will be taken against negligent officers

This investigation aims to uncover whether medications were provided, who managed the facility, and why such negligence continued. Delving into these questions is essential, and a study has been initiated. Although those responsible will face stringent action, transparency with the public is also crucial. Rekha Sharma confirmed that a team has been formed to seek answers and recommend strict actions against culpable officers. Additionally, night shelters (Raen Basera) in Delhi will also be scrutinized. NCW has established a fact-finding team for all these concerns.

What did Minister Atishi say?

These deaths are reportedly due to health problems and malnutrition, highlighting inadequate facilities for the children. Atishi remarked that such news in the capital is shocking, pledging that if found true, such negligence would not be tolerated. This is a serious issue necessitating a thorough investigation to revamp these care homes and ensure better facilities.
