Doctors at AIIMS Bhopal in the capital of Madhya Pradesh performed a highly complex surgery, a procedure so rare that fewer than 10 cases exist worldwide. They managed to successfully extract a man's eye that was embedded within the upper part of his skull. The surgical team then meticulously repositioned the eye correctly, resulting in the restoration of his vision.
In fact, a young man from Jaitwara village near Bhopal was the victim of a motorcycle accident, leaving him sightless in both eyes. Initially treated at a private facility for 10 days, his declining condition led to a referral to AIIMS Bhopal. He was plagued by intense headaches, reduced vision, and recurrent nosebleeds.

'Family Feared the Eye was Dislodged'
The family had not realized that his left eye was trapped within the orbital cavity and assumed it was expelled during the accident. A scan at AIIMS Bhopal revealed air trapped inside his brain (pneumocephalus) and the left eye lodged within the ethmoid sinus.
'Patient is Stable and Under Medical Supervision'
Given the severity of the injury and the requirements for surgery, experts from neurosurgery, ophthalmology, trauma, emergency medicine, and anesthesia teamed up at AIIMS Bhopal. Dr. Amit Agrawal (Neurosurgery), Dr. Bhavana Sharma (Ophthalmology), Dr. B.L. Soni (Maxillofacial Surgery), and Dr. Vaishali Vendeskar (Anesthesia) stabilized the patient's neurological state and, using microscopy, skillfully extracted and repositioned the left eye from the ethmoid sinus. The patient is currently stable and remains under medical care.
Insights from AIIMS Doctor
Dr. Bhavana Sharma from AIIMS Bhopal explained that the complexity of the case increased as the left eye had ended up in the ethmoid sinus (a hollow space within the small bone between the eyes) due to the accident. Such cases are extremely rare, with fewer than ten reported worldwide. The severity of the condition necessitated collaboration among specialists from multiple departments. Despite the grave situation, our multifaceted approach enabled us to perform the surgery successfully.
The meticulous procedure highlights AIIMS Bhopal's commitment to pioneering superior healthcare solutions, offering hope to even the most challenging medical cases.
