Railway officials have conducted a comprehensive inspection of the newly constructed world's tallest railway bridge over the Chenab River in Jammu & Kashmir. Northern Railway is ready to start train services on this majestic bridge, situated between Sangaldan in Ramban district and Reasi.
Deepak Kumar, an engineer with Konkan Railway, told ANI that the rail services will begin shortly. He shared, 'The wagon tower has reached Resai station today. We feel immense joy and pride in our success. After prolonged hard work from the workers and engineers, they have finally succeeded. Train services on this bridge will start soon.' ... Currently, trains run from Kanyakumari to Katra on the railway line, whereas in the Kashmir Valley, services operate from Baramulla to Sangaldan.
The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project will be completed by the end of the year. USBRL's 48.1-km long Banihal-Sangaldan section was inaugurated on February 20, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The first phase of the project, covering the 118 km section from Qazigund to Baramulla, was inaugurated in October 2009.
The 18 km Banihal-Qazigund section opened in June 2013, and the 25 km Udhampur-Katra section in July 2014. The Chenab Rail Bridge, built 359 meters (approximately 109 feet) above the Chenab River in Jammu, stands about 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. This 1,315-meter-long bridge is part of a larger project aimed at making the Kashmir Valley accessible via the Indian Railway network.
